Visits of sites

Several activities were organised within the framework of the Meeting for the Advancement of Research:

  • Visits of laboratories
  • A laser shooting (Lidar)
  • Film projections with scientific content

Visits of laboratories of the University of La Réunion

Research activities at the University are led by 250 teacher-researchers and about fifteen administrative staff split between 19 teams, covering Social Sciences, Sciences and Technologies, Literature and Humanities.

Research at the University is basically pluridisciplinary. It is structured according to seven poles of competences, each one combining fundamental research and its applications:

  • Biodiversity, biotechnologies and agrofood valorisation
  • Marine and Coastal Zones
  • Factors of risks, public health, bioinformatics
  • Observation and dynamics of the natural environments
  • Indian Ocean: spaces, societies, texts
  • Regions and development
  • Data processing, modeling, reasoning

Common Documentation Service

  • The University library

  • The Multi-media Center

Visits of the "Pole of Plants Protection"

The Pole of Plants Protection (3P) is devoted to the biological or genetic fight against the enemies of crops and of natural environments in tropical zones.

It gathers the CIRAD, the INRA, the University of La Réunion, the Service of plants protection (SPV), the FDGDEC (departmental Federation of the groupings of defense against the enemies of crops).

The Pole is organized around activities of research (phytopathology, entomology, vegetal biotechnologies, genetics and ecology), of regulation, development and training.

Demonstration of laser shooting - Rayon Vert

Participants could attend a LIDAR shooting on Tuesday 3 June organised by the Laboratory of Physics of the Atmosphere (LPA) of the University of La Réunion. LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) uses the diffusion by the molecules and the atmospheric particles of a laser beam with vertically-directed impulse.

The analysis of the signal retrodiffused by the atmosphere makes it possible to determine vertical profiles of components and atmospheric parameters with high resolution.

The University of La Réunion today has two LIDARs which are operational. They measure in routine the aerosols and the temperature since 1994, ozone in troposphere since 1998 and stratosphere since 2000.

The measurement of the water vapor is under development.

Since April 1999, the LPA, in collaboration with the University of Natal, has installed and now runs a LIDAR (measurements of aerosols and temperature) on the Durban site in South Africa.
